Winter Survival and Snow Shelters

 

Course Objectives:
This course is an ideal introduction for those who wish to build safe snow shelters and stay overnight in the alpine environment.

 

Course content:

  • introduction to tramping in the snow
  • kicking steps
  • risk management in the snow
  • cutting steps
  • travelling on snow and ice
  • basic ice axe and crampon use
  • self arrests and security on steep ground
  • avalanche awareness
  • route selection
  • building snow shelters
  • transceiver use
 

 

Equipment you must bring:

  • Suitable backpack
  • Gaiters
  • Plastic or solid leather tramping / climbing boots
  • Notebook and pencil
  • Goggles / glasses
  • Waterproof and windproof trousers and jacket
  • Sleeping bag
  • Layers of thermal clothing - polyprop. wool, polarfleece, down
  • Sun and lip screen
  • Spare footwear (trainers etc)  for lodge
  • Transceiver, probe, ice axe and crampons and snow shovel
  • Camera (useful for recording technique)
  • Therma-rest or bivimat
  • Hat, gloves etc.
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Drink bottle, personal toiletries, towel and clothes for lodge
  • Torch, spare bulbs and batteries

 

Participants should be over 18 years, of reasonable fitness with some previous tramping experience. If you have any pre existing conditions of which the instructor should be aware in an emergency it is your responsibility to inform. This information will be confidential.
